Nobel laureate and former Vice President Al Gore has launched his new WE Campaign website www.wecansolveit.org. The ultimate goal of this site is to halt global warming and they are taking the first step by educating people about the climate crisis, emphasizing that it is urgent, and reminding us that it is solvable. WE is about coming together to solve a problem that effects us all.

The WE website offers you many ways to take action. You can sign a petition for a global treaty on climate change, you can tell you friends about their latest video, you can urge the press to ask about global warming, and even ask lenders to consider climate impact when funding new coal plants. And they offer some great solutions to the crisis:

Clean Energy Economy

Personal Choices

Adoption of Renewables

Enhanced Energy Efficiency

Innovative Leadership

If you haven’t already started seeing the WE media blitz, you won’t have to look too hard. You’ll begin seeing TV spots, print ads, social networks and more buzzing about it. Al Gore is giving this his all. On March 30, 2008, he appeared on CBS’s 60 Minutes to discuss the launch of the We Campaign. You can check out a short clip from the piece below.

On March 31st of last year, 2.2 million people and 2100 Sydney businesses turned off their lights for one hour. They called it “Earth Hour.” If the greenhouse reduction achieved in the Sydney CBD during Earth Hour was sustained for a year, it would be equivalent to taking 48,616 cars off the road for a year.

The goal was to inspire people to take action against climate change. And inspire it did! Unique events such as weddings by candlelight were reported and major Sydney icons like the Harbour Bridge and Opera House joined the movement by turning their lights off as well. The world took notice. Inspired by the collective effort of millions during last years event in Sydney, many major global cities are joining Earth Hour in 2008, turning a symbolic event into a global movement.

Earth Hour is March 29, 2008 from 8 – 9 PM

Five Things You Can Do:

Join us! Turn out your lights for one hour on 3/29/08 from 8-9pm.

Spread the word. Tell your friends, family, community members, & businesses.

Host a Earth Hour party by candle light. Invite others over for Earth Hour. You can have food, drinks, board games, a barbecue, all by candlelight!

Use the time to discuss other ways to reduce your carbon footprint. Whether it be replacing your light bulbs or car pooling – there’s a lot you can do.

Use the time to replace your standard light bulbs with energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs.

Leonardo DiCaprio’s “The 11th Hour” opens today in Los Angeles and New York! The film is a feature length documentary that gives an honest yet frightening account of our Earth’s current condition and explores the causes of just how we got here. But more than that, the film offers hope by highlighting the fact that we still have a chance to make a difference and heal the damage that has been done. This film will force you to be honest with yourself about what we’ve done to our planet, but it will also give you a better understanding about what we can do to begin repairing the damage. Life as we know it depends on the changes that we make today. Please support this film and do what you can to help save our planet.

Can one person really make a difference? Silk Soymilk thinks so. Silk has been dedicated to making a better, more healthy world for years. They were even voted a top environmentally friendly brand by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) . Yep, they’ve been putting their money where their mouth is!

In addition to providing a delicious variety of soymilk products, Silk believes in harnessing the power of “renewable energy”. This type of energy is considered “clean energy” because it does not pollute the air or contribute to the global warming crisis. Green energy also increases our energy independence, improves the security of our energy sources, and creates more jobs. Silk offsets all of their energy consumption with wind energy and even earned the Green Power Partner of the Year award for 2006.

Did you know that the generation of electricity is the single largest source of industrial air pollution? It’s true. And the average American household produces more than 35,000 pounds of green house gases each year. What you can you do? Well Silk is going to give you an easy way to help out!

They’ve launched their “Green Caps for Green Energy” promotion and it’s truly something special. Whenever you buy a Silk Soymilk product with a green cap, you can then go to SilkSoymilk.com and enter your carton’s UPC number. This will enter you in their sweepstakes for a green home makeover. But even more exciting, for every code entered Silk will increase their overall green power contribution by 30 kWts hours… that’s enough to power an average home for an entire day! You get a delicious healthy beverage and you get to help the world too! I bought my carton of the chocolate Silk Soymilk and entered the UPC number on their site just today. Don’t forget to add it to your shopping list this week and look for the green cap!
