Every year, more than thirty thousand people commit suicide in the U.S., something not a lot of people are aware of, and which makes suicide one of the main causes of death, especially when it comes to people between 15 and 24 years of age. The reason why many teenagers and adults choose death is not necessarily because they want to die, but because they cannot seem to be able to cope with their problems, and they want their troubles and pain to come to an end.

More people than we would imagine are affected by isolation, hopelessness, uncertainties and other issues. Therefore they need someone to call and talk to that can give them hope and the necessary strength to surpass the difficult moments in their lives. That is where life lines come in very handy. A life line is where people who feel that they could harm themselves, or people concerned about friends with this problem, can call and seek advice and help. These telephone networks are fully equipped and perfectly able to take a large number of calls, to which people with training respond.

One such suicide prevention organization managing a life line is called The Suicide Prevention Action Network. This is the only national suicide prevention organization also offering support to people who has attempted suicide and survived.

As Dante pointed out in the Divine Comedy, suicide is violence against oneself, but there are other types of violence, and more importantly, organizations working to prevent violence in any way, shape or form. The Consortium for Citizens with Disabilities, and The Family Violence Prevention Fund are also available. The former is an organization that mainly advocates on behalf of people with disabilities, and on behalf of members of their families, also lobbying for the appropriate legislation meant to fully integrate people with disabilities. People with disabilities and their family members are encouraged to demand that their rights be respected by everyone. Another activity of the organization is to encourage members of public offices to develop better policies in this direction.The latter, on the other hand is an organization which aims to prevent violence within homes and within society in general. Every day, many children, women and men suffer physical and emotional abuse, which makes it necessary for more people to get informed and become more involved in activities of violence prevention in their respective countries and cities.
